Article Takeaways
From the article “Understand the Versatility and Necessity of Hashtag Activism” I gathered that my hashtag should be short, memorable and descriptive. A short and memorable hashtag has the ability to grow more because more people will remember it and therefore use it. They can be descriptive in the sense that they literally describe what the activism calls for like in the case of “#IceBucketChallenge, or “#TakeaKnee.” These describe an action that is directly associated with the movement, in turn causing the action to be associated with the ideology behind the movement. Or they can be descriptive of the morals and ethics behind the activism like in “#MeToo.” This is short, memorable, adn describes the idea that many women have experienced harassment or sexual abuse, and is a call for women to come together and stand up against the issue in soidarity.
Productive Partnerships
For my group’s recycling initiative, I think we could partner with the Student Government Association. They are an influential school organization with ties directly to school officials and have the best interest of the students in mind. I know they are committed to the greater good of the community because of their many service initiatives, and I think our cause would align with theirs. Another potential partner could be Saints Center for Service. Part of their mission statement is to help students “become active members of the Marymount and Arlington communities through intentional community engagement and service.” Partnering with them would indicate our movement’s commitment to the greater good of the environment adn Arlington.
Exciting and Enticing
A method I would use to galvanize my audience would be to spread awareness about the methods of dealing with trash on campus. I think that simply educating the university community on how their recycling is being dealt with or not dealt with would be striking enough to gain viewers and followers. We would also educate the audience on pollution and encourage good behavior by telling them that there are actionable steps that can be taken. The actionable steps would be a mix of both personal habits that contribute to the cause as well as events that we put on in support of it.
